Common Scents

Posted by Charlie Cabrera on 20th Jul 2014

It only makes sense to put on a great smelling cologne before going out or drive nice smelling car to

impress your passengers. Of course, it also agood idea to keep your home smelling nice too.

However, how do you know if everyone will like your cologne, car freshener or home scent?

Well we all know that common scents such as cat urine, sewage and garbage are definitely not liked.

But, a scent can be so personal that a person can have a negative or positive reaction based upon their experience or even belief system. For instance, a vegetarian my not like the smell of cooking bacon...because it represents the killing and eating of an animal.

Even a great smelling air freshener like musk can smell bad if it is labeled with a bad name like "Dog Crap" Through my many years in the air freshener industry, I noticed that the name of a fragrance is extremely suggestive to a persons reaction.

Or (true story)I met a lady who stated that the smell of cow manure in a green pasture brought  back fond memories of life on the farm! LOL...this is where we have to use our own common sense.

If you are having a wedding reception in a church, of course you may want to have the essence  of a beautiful Plumeria flower, or fresh scent of White Tea. Cow manure would not fit the bill. Unless the reception is in a barn!

It is good to have a fragrance that is congruent to the occasion and surroundings. For instance, if you have a bakery, and want to enhance the entry area, a spa scent would not be a good match. Vanilla or ,cinnamon would be more congruent.

The lesson I have learned over time is, if you are in business, don't just go by your personal likings, get other opinions from friends, and  customers and above all... use common sense!
