Importance of the Right Scent

An interior designer will design and decorate a facility to create a particular ambiance. For example , let’s say that you have an old brick building that will be converted into a bed and breakfast.

The designer will decorate with old fashioned leather chairs, lamp shades, wood chairs & tables, maybe a crackling fireplace and elaborately carved stair bannister. Well you get the picture.

Imagine walking in and smelling Pina Colada! That would not be congruent to the overall theme or design and would confuse one's senses and seem out of place.

To elaborate on this (imagine hearing hard rock band playing only bluegrass at a hard rock concert.

Going back to the vintage bed and breakfast for a moment, one would expect to smell a bit of earthiness or even a cigar like aroma.

Or even a freshly baked cake or pie scent or a nice breakfast scent that would be a normal occurrence.

I know of property managers who are very aware of how a good scent plays a major role in their ability to lease out an apartment unit. If a potential customer comment s on how nice it smells, the odds are dramatically increased that the unit will rent out.

A great example is if a non- smoker takes a tour through an apartment or is checking out a used car. If he / she does not smell a smoke odor, that person is far more receptive to leasing the unit. Imagine if that person smelled a smoking residue. That would certainly kill the deal!

So in a nutshell, scenting is extremely important in marketing, since It is directly linked to one's emotions and overall experience.

You can tune out sound, close your eyes... but you can't stop breathing!.
